Back to OCNia Home
Do I need experience to take Nia?
No previous experience is necessary! In Nia, we do things The Body's Way; we move in ways that feel good in
our own body. Each person chooses their own pace and level of exertion.
How long is a Nia class?
Most Nia classes last 60 minutes. Nia Jams, Workshops or Master Classes are usually longer than a conventional class.
What's a Nia class like?
Nia classes typically follow this format:
Begin with a key focus or intention.
Warm up, preparing the heart and lungs, and activating energy into the joints.
Energizing movements with mobility, flexibility and strength to achieve whole-body conditioning.
Calming, Harmonizing & Recentering to harmonize the body, mind, emotions and spirit.
Floorplay, or "fitness on the floor," using gravity and space to improve strength and flexibility.
Concluding with an appreciation of our body's abilities, and transitioning to the rest of our day.
What is The Joy of Movement?
The first principle of Nia, The Joy of Movement is the physical celebration of the body. Nia offers you a chance
to experience the joy of moving in your body, in the ways that feel best to you. When you feel joy in your
movement, you are encouraged to increase and sustain the sensation. When you don't feel joy, you modify
the movement until you do.
